Bloomington IL Mitsubishi News: Newest model may be headed to the states
All in favor say “I”! As a favorite in Japan, could this mini Mitsubishi model make it in the United States market? Could it be the car that puts Mitsubishi back in the game in the American market? Are we ready for something economic, forward-thinking, semi-luxurious and cute? Oh, did I mention affordable?
Well, all this and more can be found in the Mitsubishi i. No, there’s no pod or pad or phone attached. Just plain i – as in I want to drive something different that the rest of the neighborhood.
Mitsubishi’s foray into the mainstream car market didn’t compete as well as expected with the likes of Toyota and Nissan. So what’ next for Japan’s “other” automaker? Bloomington, IL Mitsubishi car dealers hope it is the Mitsubishi I coming to U.S. showrooms. This rear-engine model hasn’t left Japan so far, but this space-age pod car has a following here as well.
With great mileage, about 40 mpg highway, and capable of speeds up to 60 mph (even though it takes several second to get there), will the Mitsubishi I be the next darling of the eco-driving crowd? Bloomington, IL car dealers and Mitsubishi customers believe it will.
It had been around since 2006 so the any kinks and issues should be mostly worked out by now. The i is inexpensive and said to be reliable by auto industry experts and owners alike in the Japanese market. The size of this vehicle is only about 11 feet long and five feet wide and runs a 64 horsepower engine. A three-cylinder engine is mounted between the rear wheels.
The interior headroom and legroom are quite sufficient, and as a four-seater offers room for the family. But it might feel a little close with a full passenger load, so make sure everyone used their deodorant. The rear seats will split and fold for maximum cargo space, but even behind the rear seats the i boasts more room than the trunk of a Honda Accord.
Comfort and luxury are not forsaken in the diminutive Mitsubishi i. With air conditioning, all-wheel drive and a heated seat for the driver, most of us would be content. But add in touch-screen navigation, keyless ignition, ABS, airbags, power windows and locks all for about $17,500 and we have an affordable little luxury car. Bloomington, IL Mitsubishi car customers will certainly want to see the i in local showrooms.
One luxury feature not mentioned is the Parking Assist, but with its length, the i should be able to zip into most any space forward. That would certainly be a welcome change for many of us who flunked the parallel parking portion of Driver’s Ed. Bloomington IL car dealers will no doubt be anticipating this little jewel.
So, when will we know if Mitsubishi will share the i with the world? No word on that yet, but if we all clap our hands and say “I believe!”, perhaps this too cute model might just appear in a showroom near us. A few emails and Tweets sent Mitsubishi’s way might not hurt either.
